This English oak measures 37' 10" around the base. The thickening of its trunk is a reaction to a fungal infection in the tree's heartwood, as it lays down layers of 'reaction wood' around the rotten core to strengthen its weakened trunk. This phenomenon is sometimes called 'bottle butt'.
